Q: What do you do and how long have you worked with Prairie Records? How did you end up in cannabis retail?
A: I am the Manager of both the Broadway and Stonebridge locations in Saskatoon. I was hired as a Key Holder in March of 2019; from there I worked my way up to where I am now. I was looking for a career change and saw the posting for a position with Prairie Records and thought that working in the budding cannabis industry would be something that I would thoroughly enjoy.
Q: What drew you to Prairie Records?
A: I fell in love with the Prairie Records concept immediately, it felt nostalgic – vinyl, good music, and cannabis, the three just go hand in hand. The more I learned about the company the more I loved who they were and the more determined I was to become a permanent face in the company.
Q: What are some of the changes you’ve witness in the industry? In retail? In the community at large in relation to cannabis? Since you’ve joined Prairie Records
A: This is an ever-changing industry, still in infancy. There are so many changes yet to come. The biggest change I feel is how many people want more education on the products. They are eager to learn the benefits of cannabis products compared to just looking at cannabis as a “drug”, especially as products and ways of consumption have changed – there is something for every consumer now. Another change was the opening of licenses – so many stores have opened in Saskatchewan in the past 6 months, the market is much more competitive than it was 2 years ago when we first opened.
Q: Who are the people among your team, in the community or in the industry at large that help you in managing and staying afloat in cannabis?
A: I have an amazing work family; I don’t know what I would do without their support and hard work. My boss Dustin has been my biggest supporter since I first ventured on this journey. I wouldn’t be where I am without his guidance, support, and his belief in me.
Q: What brands or products do you love right now? Why?
A: I am a huge fan of CBD products, I am not much for high THC products, however the odd time I do indulge I look for small batch craft cannabis – companies who care about quality in their cultivation.
Q: What keeps you motivated, engaged, and excited to continue to be a critical part of establishing this new industry’s success?
A: Being able to educate customers. Having new cannabis consumers come into the store, asking questions, and having them walk out with the information and a product that they were looking for. When they come back and thank you because what you recommended and the viable information you sent them off with. Bottom line, I can turn down the stigma on cannabis by helping my customers through education. Seeing them walk out of the store with a smile on their face, well that is all the motivation I need to keep pushing this industry forward.
